HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting.

All student candidates must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and workplace procedures:

Followed DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including:

• manage the unconscious, breathing casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise
• manage the unconscious, non-breathing adult, including:
  • perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor 
  • follow single rescue procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compression
  • follow the prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
  • responded appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
  • handing over to emergency services
  • providing an accurate verbal report of the incident
  • reviewing the incident
• manage the unconscious, non-breathing child, including:
  • single rescuer CPR on a child resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
• manage the unconscious, non-breathing infant, including:
  • single rescuer CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

Responds to First Aid for an adult and a child or infant incidents:

• Identifying the casualty’s illness or injury through history, signs and symptoms
• Using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
• Providing appropriate first aid treatment
• Conveying incident details to emergency services or advising casualty on any required post incident action.
• Providing an accurate verbal and written report of the incident
• Reviewing the incident.

Applied first aid procedures for adults and children for the following:

• Asthma
• Anaphylaxis
• Bleeding control
• Choking including an infant
• Envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
• Fractures, sprains and strains, appropriate immobilisation techniques
• Minor wound cleaning and dressing
• Nosebleed
• Shock

There are no pre- requisites for the HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting course. Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance. Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions. Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. The face to face training is 8 hours and covers both theory and practical aspects of the

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting course. Students are required to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the course commencement or will be refused entry. There is a short break at 11am and lunch is at 1pm. Lunch is not provided at the course.

There is a short multiple choice quiz at the end of the training, covering the practical Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care information learnt that day. Students will also be assessed on practical skills as a requirement to pass the course. Once completed, all students will receive a First Aid manual.

The HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting certificate is valid for three (3) years from the completion date. The Code of Practice and Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills are refreshed annually.

Once enrolled, Tablelands First Aid will email students a booking confirmation with venue details and maps, course requirements and terms of enrolment.
